Years ago, there was a president who was run out of office because he could not deliver the tapes he had recorded. Some minutes were missing, and he covered up a crime by his actions and words. Nixon resigned and the rest is history except the fact that both Republicans and Democrats agreed on his guilt. Today we have a memo that describes another situation that implicates the leaders of the FBI and a presidential nominee in a scheme to affect a national election, but there is no agreement between the parties to pursue the guilty and prevent this from happening again. The Republicans are pushing for all-out prosecutions, and the Democrats wish to cover it up and make it go away.
The fight between the parties to release the memo was interesting because the Democrats seem to fear its publication, and the Republicans wanted everyone to see it. What was more interesting was the media’s position with the New York Times and the Washington Post both asking to keep it classified at the same time as the movie about the Post publishing the Pentagon Papers, while they were still classified, is playing at most theaters. The papers have decided to publish stories that hurt the Republicans and not publish anything that goes against their political bias. What a shame to waste their First Amendment rights on politics and favorites instead of growing up and publishing unbiased news.
Finally, the memo was released, and the media outlets went wild with those against the memo saying that it would hurt our intelligence bureaus and the FBI, and those for saying that the special prosecutor was appointed under false pretenses. I think they are both right, and those agencies that were less than truthful and biased in their decisions should be hurt with those in charge removed and prosecuted. Most of the information in the memo was expected, and much of it was known before. The dossier about Trump’s Russian ties had been declared less than true by Director Comey, and its purchase by the Clinton election people had been established. These two issues should have sparked an investigation by the Justice Department and pushed for by both parties as it was a direct challenge to the presidential election. The rest of the memo about using the dossier to get FISA warrants was already suspected, and this should have scared everybody in Congress. For top administration people in the White House to use the Justice Department as a weapon against the opposing party in an election makes us just another banana republic and not the democracy that the Founders created. Turning the top police department to aid a political campaign should make us all shake in our boots. Many are, but there are many more trying to cover it up and preserve their political power. This morning Congressman Adam Schiff told a TV anchor that the FISA court knew that the dossier was introduced by a political party. He said this to discredit the memo but created another facet to the information in the memo. His comments now implicate the FISA judges in being weaponized by one political party against their opposition party with their knowledge of it.
Whether you are for or against the memo or arguments about them, I would ask a simple question of everybody: do you believe in the rule of law and do you believe that people who break the law should be prosecuted? If your answer is no then you have joined the alt-right and become an anarchist. How can any person in the Congress of the United States of America protect someone or group when it is evident that misdeeds were done that would harm a national election? Why would any congressperson or senator protect the part of their party that is rotten and criminal? Why aren’t both parties trying to clean up this mess? The fact that nearly half of Congress is willing to accept any criminal activity to preserve their power or defame a duly elected president may be the worst crime being committed.
Where are Adams, Jefferson, Washington and Franklin when we really need them. They are rolling and rolling over in their graves. God help Us.
