THE SWAMP

We have heard “drain the swamp” from our new president, but what is the swamp? It all started with the new Constitution and when our Founders decided to build a capital city in a swampy area outside of any of the thirteen states. That swamp was eventually drained but a new one was started almost immediately, namely a political swamp. Jefferson and Adams had a disagreement about the presidency, and it started there. Adams had wanted the head of state to follow the English model and have a monarch who ruled for life, whereas Jefferson wanted what we ended up getting. It was either government by the elite for the common man or government by the same people being governed.

Two thousand years ago a baby was born, and we are going to celebrate his birthday. There were no TV cameras or radio broadcasts to announce the birth, and there was no mention in a newspaper. The printing press would not be invented for another 1500 years. The mother insisted that she was still a virgin and her husband had married her anyway. He was a carpenter, and they had traveled to a far away city for a census. When they arrived in this city, they could not find any rooms to stay in as the inns were filled. They finally found space in an animal shelter where they stayed through the birth. The baby was wrapped in rags and placed in an eating trough for the animals, which were probably sheep and goats. They were alone without any reporters to tell the world that a new king was born. The setting was as you would expect of the poorest people in the world.

A few years ago some friends and I took our tailgate grill to a rally in Fairmont, WV. We cooked 1000 hot dogs and gave a monetary contribution to start Joe Manchin’s campaign for governor of West Virginia. His daughter worked with us, and he was a friend of our company’s president. We were family, and we felt that he knew the problems of both the working man and the business owner. Joe proceeded to become governor and did a decent job with a Democratic Party machine that was many years in the making.

TAX THE RICH

As a couple of senators were discussing the tax bill before Congress, the Democrat said that he would not support any bill that allowed the rich to get richer. Tax the rich and do not give any tax break to them is the cry from the left. This is not a new form of bias and has been used to get votes for a long time. What is amazing is that we live in a time of extreme vigilance of anyone who shows any bias against a specific group. Why not tax white men or tax illegal aliens or just put a cap on how much wealth you can amass.

WHY THANKSGIVING

My wife and I had a great Thanksgiving with family in central Ohio. There was food, wine, movies, football and, of course, shopping. We gave thanks for our blessings through prayer. As we drove home, I started to think about blessings and wondered if the reporter that compared Trump with Charles Manson was thankful for anything or was the reporter that went after Pres. Obama’s daughter thankful for anything. Were the NFL players who knelt during the national anthem thankful for anything since they seem to dislike the country that gave them the chance to make millions playing a game?
