KILLING IN AMERICA-part 1

Guns do not kill people, people do. There is no reason for anyone to own or possess a military type firearm. A teaspoon does not make you fat. We need to register all firearms and their owners. The 2nd Amendment gives me the right to own any kind of gun I want. Handguns should be banned. We have heard all of the previous statements after any killing that was caused by a firearm. Both the left and the right rush to defend their positions on gun control or lack of it. No one seems to care about finding the real reason why these horrible things occur. I want to explore some of the possible reasons or causes of this violent behavior other than gun control.

While driving from Pittsburgh to Morgantown last weekend, I was traveling on Interstate 79 at about 8 or 9 miles per hour above the speed limit. The speed limit for most of the time has been raised to 70 so I was breaking the traffic laws governing speed. I passed a few cars but many were passing me with some seeming to be at least 20 miles per hour over the limit. Now and then, you could see a driver using their cell phone and some were even appearing to text. Watching other drivers as they passed or were being passed gives you a lot of reason to think about the responsibility needed when behind the wheel. Now, what does this have to do with using a gun to hurt another person? It is simply the respect for the rule of law. Most drivers on American roads do not follow the traffic laws when it comes to speed, using turn signals, following too closely or yielding the right of way. As a result, we kill about 40,000 people each year on our highways. You might call this road anarchy, but no one seems to give much thought about those who lost their lives except their families. We call the occurrences traffic accidents and that explains everything.

A few years ago there were some speed cameras and traffic light cameras installed in a town in central Ohio that I travel through now and then. The local paper reported that the townspeople were up in arms about the cameras because many of them were receiving tickets. One woman got 6 tickets in one day for running the traffic light. The next year the town council was voted out of office, and soon after, the speed sensing cameras and traffic light cameras were removed. As with many of us who drive, we believe that we have the right to speed and push our luck at traffic lights. Road anarchy or the right to disobey the law seems to be a right that we think we have.

We have the same disregard for the gun laws on the books. Cities that have strict gun laws seem to have the most gun crime. Guns are only owned by those who believe they can disregard the law. We also find that background checks are unreliable because information is not being put into the databases used for the checks. At the same time many states allow guns to be sold at open forums without complete checks on past actions such as mental illness, or arrests and convictions of crimes. We know why traffic laws are being broken. Most state legislatures have decided to use money in places other than traffic enforcement. Police and highway patrols have taken a financial hit with very little presence on the highway. There is no immediate emergency to cause more traffic enforcement money being made available because they are just “traffic accidents.” There is an emergency to start enforcing gun laws that are currently on the books.
